Facebook isn’t the only social networking site to reach its ‘tipping point’ of late. It appears Bebo is doing pretty well too. In the past six months the site popular with 15-24 year olds has grown by 49% while MySpace growth trails behind at 28%.

A cautionary note though. Already there are rumblings that Facebook, whose audience has grown at 19 times the rate of MySpace’s (523%), may be past its best best as users complain that it’s in danger of becoming too much like MySpace with naughty companies and marketeers using the platform and various applications that are breeding like rabbits to sell their products.

It will be interesting to see whether Facebook will be able to resist the corporate dollar as more and more companies want to jump into bed with them.

I hope they keep it under control. Whenever I venture back to my MySpace profile I feel slightly nauseous. It’s a bit like seeing an *ex girlfriend who was a colourful character but didn’t have much going on beyond a loud voice and a pretty hideous wardrobe.

Why can’t people just be bloody happy with something that made them happy at the time? Just like an ex, just say “hey, it was good whilst it lasted: we had fun, good sex, good conversation”. Obviously I am not having sex with an social networking site- that’s rather an orgy too far for me.

Of course Facebook will sign its life away to feed corporate fodder to the kids. But why not, eh? I bloody would.

I love all the new fangled gizmos I can add to my Facebook- I can share videos, say what books I am reading, bite the shit out of my mate’s face (zombie mode, I believe).

This morning I bought my friends a virtual round of drinks; at 10am we all got pissed. Some things about these sites I hate, but when treats like that are available I am very bloody happy with something that is bringing happiness to others.

I think sometimes there’s an urgency to be the first to abandon these things as soon as they become mainstream. And while that might make some kind of sense when it comes to holiday destinations or silver trainers, it’s kinda self-defeating with social networks. Nevertheless, let me say it for the record: I am so *ovah* whatever-comes-after-Facebook.

It looks like MySpace have seen the error of their ways and are following Facebook in opening up the platform to third party developers. Maybe reports of its death will turn out to be exaggerated.

    PS. Whatever happened to Friendsreunited?
